I swear I didn’t Netflix everything on Peter Boyle’s IMDb page. Outland is just a run-of-the-mill bad sci-fi film starringĀ Sean Connery. It’s essentially a western set on Jupiter’s moon Io.
That means there’s not much to report from a science perspective. In the opening credits they mention that Io has 1/6 the Earth’s gravity but then they vigorously ignore that for most of the film. Now, this isn’t a major problem in and of itself. Heck, even 2001 does it for the scenes on the Moon. But then there’s this:
Then things started to bother me a bit more. For example, this:
What’s going on here? Why is this guy weightless? He’s supposed to be suspended in vacuum. Do they have gravity-free prison cells?
In the dramatic closing scene of the film, Connery, outside in a spacesuit, makes use of the low-gravity environment in a way crucial to the plot. So at least they got that right. One final note: there’s no excess of titanium on Io. They could’ve just made it a sulfur mine and gone home.
